White fillings

Dental white fillings have come a long way since silver or amalgam restorations. Today, more dental patients are opting for white or composite fillings because of their function and overall aesthetic look. Composite fillings are tooth-colored and are made from plastic and ceramic materials. Because these fillings blend in with natural tooth color, they appeal to more patients who do not want their dental work to stand out. White fillings blend in so well with natural tooth color that it is sometimes almost impossible to tell that someone has had dental work done at all.

When Are White Fillings Used?

Composite fillings are commonly used on front teeth because of the area’s high visibility. White fillings are most commonly used in cosmetic dentistry where appearance is a big concern of almost all patients. But they are also used in general dentistry on back teeth, but that depends on the extent and area of the tooth decay. Keep in mind that a silver filling may be the best option for that area because it can better withstand the great amounts of pressure put on back teeth or molars through chewing.

Dentists also prefer silver fillings for back teeth because the material sets quickly and can be placed in moist areas beneath the gum line. White fillings, however, continue to be the best option for front teeth. Your dentist will be able to choose the best material for your filling depending on their criteria for using each type of material and what presents in the tooth during the decay removal and restoration process.

Maintenance Requirements

As with any filling, over time the seal between the tooth and the restoration breaks down. This can cause a weakening in the material, which subsequently can lead to bacteria getting into the tooth structure underneath the filling. No matter what type of filling is used, it is important to brush well and see your dentist for regular check ups so that any issues with the fillings can be caught early and addressed immediately.
